Leipzig county is located south of the city of Leipzig. Neigbhboring counties are Saxony-Anhalt in the west, Thuringia in the south-west, North-Saxony in the north and east and Central Saxony in the south-east. The county is located in the lowlands and relatively flat. Worth mentioning are the several lakes in the area of the "Leipziger Neuseenland" in the western part of the county which arose from the floodings of the former lignite surface minings.
